Swastika Surfboards

"Dutch" and Swastika Surfboards

Not much is known about ol' Dutch, but he's probably the most O.G. Surf Nazi in the history of all surf nazis.  Dutch worked for a company called Pacific Redi-Cut Homes back in the 1930's, in the Los Angeles area.  The company originally sold "kit homes" in Southern California in the early 1900's, and in the 1930's they started making surfboards (becoming one of the first commercial producers of surfboards in the nation).

Pacific Redi-Cut Homes Surfboards were lighter than most of the boards out there at the time, because they combined redwood with balsa wood to make the boards easier to carry on the beach.  The redwood was used for the stringer and rails and the balsa made up the rest.  Both were joined with a waterproof glue.  Dutch would mix the glue for making the boards.  Apparently Dutch didn't speak any English, which is probably why he was nicknamed "Dutch".  Anyway, the boards were shaped by the legendary Whitey Harrison.  Dutch started marking each board with a swastika, thus creating the now infamous "Swastika Surfboard" model.

Around 1939, when World War II broke out in Europe, Pacific Redi-Cut Homes stopped producing the Swastika model boards (for obvious reasons).  They also found out later that Dutch turned out to be a real nazi.  D'oh!

The Swastika Surfboards are now very rare and worth a small fortune.  At a vintage surf auction 2001, one of the Swastika model boards went for over $18,000.00.  No one knows whatever happened to Dutch.
